Canada’s Finest “Madman”
“Montreal woman seeks compensation in ’50s brainwashing case”
–CBC News, Montreal, January 8, 2007
“HUNDREDS of mentally ill patients who were subjected to barbaric CIA-funded brain-washing experiments…could be entitled to compensation… Doctor Ewan Cameron…developed techniques used by Nazi scientists to wipe out the existing personalities of people in his care…using drugs such as LSD on hundreds of patients… only 77 of them were awarded compensation. Now a landmark ruling…in Montreal will allow more than 250 former patients…to seek compensation… Using techniques similar to those portrayed in the celebrated novel the Manchurian Candidate… Cameron developed a range of depatterning “treatments” while director of the Allan Memorial Institute at McGill University… Patients were woken from drug-induced stupors two or three times a day for multiple electric shocks. In a specially designed “sleep room”…Cameron placed a speaker under the patient’s pillow and relayed negative messages for 16 hours a day.” – “Mind Control Victims Win Court Case” by Karin Goodwin, The Sunday Times, October 17, 2004
Donald Ewen Cameron was born in Scotland in 1901. After graduating from the University of Glasgow, he moved to Canada shortly thereafter and began working at the Brandon Mental Hospital in Manitoba. By 1938, he was appointed Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at Albany State Medical School and so moved to New York state. During his tenure at Albany, Cameron began his research into sensory deprivation along with the study of memory. He was recruited by the OSS (forerunner to the CIA) during the Second World War and in 1943, although still living in Albany he began working at Montreal’s McGill University.
The Allan Memorial Institute, which housed the Psychiatry Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital, had just opened, being part of McGill University Health Centre. The “Allan” was located in a beautiful mansion built by Sir Hugh Allan, a wealthy Montreal businessman and perched on the side of Mount Royal. The Allen family donated it to the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1940. Unfortunately, the exterior beauty belied the devilish deeds that took place within.
“It was during this era that Cameron became known worldwide, serving as the second President of the World Psychiatric Association as well as president of the American and Canadian psychiatric associations. He was also a member of the Nuremberg medical tribunal…where he accused German medics of things he himself did between 1934–60 or later, though his scientific work during World War II for the OSS has never been a secret.” –Gordon Thomas, “Journey into Madness”, 1993, pages 167- 68
In 1945, Cameron was sent to Nuremberg, Germany by Allen Dulles to examine Nazi war criminal Rudolf Hess in order to assess if he was fit to stand trial. It is believed by some (including Allen Dulles, CIA) that the Hess at Nuremberg was an impostor and not the same person who had secretly flown to Britain to meet with Winston Churchill in an attempt to overthrow Adolf Hitler and end the war. The alternative to this is that Hitler, who knew about Hess and approved the plan, secretly wanted to stop fighting with Britain and together attack Russia.
Back at the lab, Cameron experimented with LSD and PCP along with various paralytic drugs such as Seconal, Metrazol, Thorazine, Nebutal and Insulin that were used to induce comas. Apparently this was a great way to cure Schizophrenia and Manic Depression. The use of electro-shock was popular (with doctors that is) around this time and Cameron, not wanting to be left out, applied this technique like never before. Not being shy with the use of electroconvulsive therapy, he liked to crank the machine up by 30 to 40 times the normal power.
Metrazol (Pentylenetetrazol) a circulatory and respiratory stimulant was also popular when used in massive doses. It sent patients into convulsions so severe that often they needed to be x-rays to see if any fractures or bone damage had been done. In 1982 the FDA revoked its approval. Remember, this “treatment” is being carried out by a doctor in Canada, not Nazi Germany.
“Metrazol produced an explosive seizure about a minute after the injection. Often these convulsions would result in fractured bones and torn muscles… After a patient received one treatment they were resistant to subsequent treatment, resisting and pleading for it not to be done again and would have to be forcibly treated.” -Found at: fairfieldstatehospital.com
One of Cameron’s inspirations and nemesis was the British psychiatrist Dr. William Sargant who worked in the same field of deep sleep treatment and mind control. Their work paralleled each other as Sargant carried out virtually identical experiments at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London and Belmont Hospital, Surrey, also without his patients’ consent, which seems to be the norm for these people.
“In the Grid Room, an involuntary subject would be strapped into a chair…Violent resistance was quelled with curare…used in arrow poisons by South American Indians and in medicine to produce muscular paralysis. From a head bristling with electrodes and transducers, the subdued subject’s brain waves would be beamed to a nearby reception room crammed with voice analyzers and radio receivers cobbled together by laboratory assistant Leonard Rubenstein. Rubenstein, a man who lacked professional medical credentials, believed passionately in the political uses of mind control. Experiments…he declared, would one day help governments “keep tabs on people without their knowing.” –“The Hidden History of the CIA’s Electromagnetic Mind-Control Experiments”, by Alex Constantine, 1995
Cameron’s greatest creation, which made him famous, was “psychic driving”. This practice included putting subjects into drug-induced (insulin) comas, technically known as insulin coma therapy (ICT), for up to three months. Once in the coma he would play a modified tape-player using an endless-loop with pre-recorded repetitive statements. The first part of the treatment was the playing of negative messages in an effort to breakdown the mind and destroy all links to the existing personality contained within. Coupled with this, was the use of electroconvulsive therapy until the brain turned to a greenish mush resembling guacamole that oozed out through the patients ears (kidding about this part). When satisfied that nothing was left of the old personality, the messages changed to new positive recording and played endlessly. Something like Tiny Tim singing “Tiptoe through the Tulips”.
But when all is said and done the important thing is how your friends and colleagues remember you. Here is an obit to Cameron listing his “accomplishments”. The poor drooling slobs left in his wake are of no importance it appears.
“His world-wide success in his profession was, of course, due principally to his great knowledge and brilliance. But surely a great factor also was the softness – one is tempted to say loveliness – of his personality. Those who were privileged to know him, even briefly, will not soon forget the warmth and the kindliness of this understanding man” –Obituary published by the American Journal of Psychotherapy following Cameron’s death in 1967, which listed his many “accomplishments”
Yes, I can imagine that those who knew him well, as he strapped them down, as he and his team pumped them full of Metrazol, LSD or Insulin, will never “forget the warmth and the kindliness of this understanding man”. Wow, are we even talking about the same person? That is like saying Jack the Ripper was great at giving a manicure. It’s an insult and oh so typical of the verbal fallatio these “Experts” give their fraternity.
It is staggering that in the name of some self-serving morality, criminals can get away with abuse and often murder. What difference is there between Cameron (and the others mentioned here) and Tomas de Torquemada, head of the Spanish Inquisition? At the same time it is apparent that the greater the crimes of these maniacs the more glowing the endorsements and accolades. This is how Miranda Twiss describes Torquemada in her interesting book “The most Evil Men and Women in History”…. “He developed his institution with pitiless zeal and ruthless fanaticism. Clad in the austere garb of a Dominican friar, the gaunt, sunken-eyed sadist vented his hatred on Jews and heretics (meaning Muslims), forcing up to 300,000 out of Spain and destroying their lives forever.” We can easily substitute Torquemada with Cameron, Gottlieb, or Dr. Louis Jolyon West (discussed later in the book), because the modality of their abuse is irrelevant. Is torturing a person in the name of one god more acceptable than another? And when it comes down to it, the vast majority of abuse and torture is done by or on behalf of institutions and regimes. Stalin, Mao, Pot Pol, the list goes on. Surely it is illogical to presume that it was only these individuals themselves that carried out the abuse and genocides. Doubtful at best, that any of them ever actually killed someone directly. This is an opinion as I have no data on this particular comment, but of course it was the loyal followers that actually carried out the slaughter believing that they had some moral or ethical justification, a belief implanted by the crazed despot. All you need to do is reduce the opposition to a state of non-humans; to demonize them with false propaganda, and the rest is easy. And again, if you think that we are only talking about history, that this is a story from the middle-ages, then you need to look around. Torquemada might have lived five hundred years ago, but WWII was less than 80 years ago and as they say, the beat goes on. Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya are only a few happening now.
“Metrazol-like drugs are still used in interrogations today. According to reports from several former noncommissioned Army officers, who served on rendition-related security details in Turkey, Pakistan and Romania, drugs that produce effects quite similar to Metrazol are still used in 2010 by the Pentagon and CIA on enemy combatants and rendered subjects held at the many “black sites” maintained across the globe. Observed one former officer recently, “They would twist up like a pretzel, in unbelievable shapes and jerk and shake like crazy, their eyes nearly popping out of their heads.“ -The Hidden Tragedy of the CIA’s Experiments on Children” by H. P. Albarelli Jr. and Jeffrey S. Kaye
