Everywhere we look are the blaring messages concerning “Climate Change” and “Global Warming”. There are innumerable explanations, opinions and “facts” that firmly lay the blame at the feet of us, human society. It is our fault and now our responsibility.
Apparently we have to cut back on everything from gasoline consumption to how much toilet tissue we use. We have in many places elaborate re-cycling programs. Blue boxes, Green boxes and trash bins for the rest, much of which is never actually recycled. Many municipalities and governments wish to implement carbon taxes and some have started to do so.
“Premier Kathleen Wynne is pledging to unveil a carbon-pricing plan this spring as Ontario looks to ramp up its fight against global warming.” –The Globe and Mail, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015
We also have a multitude of eco-warriors from individuals to organizations such as Greenpeace all doing their damnedest to turn the tide of this catastrophe, or at least, this is the way it would appear on the surface. We even had the the movie and box office hit, “An Inconvenient Truth” staring United States Vice President, Al Gore. However, in 2007 a London Judge, Mr Justice Barton, stated that, “…nine significant errors in the film, some of which, he said, had arisen in “the context of alarmism and exaggeration”, according to an article in the Guardian Newspaper.
“Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.”
In fact the words used to describe Gore’s movie by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, in Washington, DC, are “One-sides, Misleading, Exaggerated, Speculative” and “Wrong”. They conclude by saying:
“Vice President Gore calls global warming a “moral issue,” but for him it is a moralizing issue—a license to castigate political adversaries and blame America first for everything from hurricanes to floods to wildfires to tick-borne disease…Nearly every significant statement that Vice President Gore makes regarding climate science and climate policy is either one sided, misleading, exaggerated, speculative, or wrong. In light of these numerous distortions, AIT is ill-suited to serve as a guide to climate science and climate policy for the American people.”
But what else should we expect from a politician of his calibre? Has any politician ever told the entire true? Somewhat doubtful. So the issue is not about “Global Warming” per se, but about pollution. If the Global Warming debate is complex and misleading, pollution is not. It is straight forward, or at least we would hope so. Even here, we have a massive imbalance of information, because we are constantly told that it is CO2 that is the main culprit and “we” are the ones responsible. “We” of course means the average citizen and tax payer, rather than any corporation or industry. However, this is a fallacy. Pollution from CO2 is an issue, but it is secondary to a much worst pollutant, that being methane.
“Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame”
The movie “Cowspiracy” (found on Netflix) examines the massive impact on the environment that domesticated livestock has. This impact includes, not only methane emissions, but the gigantic amount of water consumed, along will feed, the land set aside to produce the feed and grow the crops, and most alarmingly, the unstoppable deforestation in places such as the Amazon used to graze more cattle. The estimates are that between one to two acres of rainforest are cleared every second.
This amazing and startling documentary clearly shows that the major issue is not the burning of fossil fuel, but the raising of domesticated livestock. Basically cow farts and all the environmental impact that goes along with this industry. And as usual, we will foot the bill as we are being mislead and lied to by governments and NGO’s alike.
